Surf lessons for children in Tenerife
from €50

Their first session, with an instructor all to themselves
Children learn to surf much sooner than you might think: with a softboard, waist-deep water and someone to give them a push at just the right moment, most of them manage to stand up on their first lesson. That’s why at Kontraola the youngest children (from the age of 5) are always placed in private or semi-private lesson, with the instructor in the water right beside them the whole time.
Lessons last 2 hours: half an hour of warm-up and theory on the sand (how to lie down, paddle and get up) and an hour and a half in the water. We practise at the water’s edge, in small, foamy waves, and only go a little further out once the child can stand confidently.
From the 13 years They can also sign up for the group class (maximum of 6 pupils per instructor), which is the most economical option and a favourite amongst teenagers.

Frequently asked questions
At what age can children start surfing?
From the age of 5 in private or semi-private lessons. For group lessons, we require pupils to have reached the age of 13.
Do you need to be able to swim?
Yes, the basics: the lesson takes place at the water’s edge, with the water up to your waist and the instructor by your side, but it’s important that you feel comfortable in the sea.
Can I go surfing with my son or daughter?
Of course. The semi-private class is for two people with one instructor, regardless of their ages. For families of three or more, please get in touch and we’ll organise a family class for you.
What happens if there are no waves or the weather’s bad?
At Playa de las Américas, there are almost always small waves, perfect for children. If the conditions aren’t safe, we’ll let you know and reschedule the lesson for another day or time at no extra cost.
What do they need to bring?
Swimsuit, towel, sun cream and a willingness to have fun. We’ll provide everything else. There are lockers and showers at the school.
